FREE School Meals

From the beginning of the autumn term 2014, significant changes are happening to school food: every pupil in reception, year 1 and 2 will be eligible for FREE school meals and from January, new food standards are being introduced.  These are just two of the sixteen actions in the governments ‘School Food Plan’, which aims to transform what children eat in schools and how they learn about food.

“Good food and good food culture has been shown to lead not only to healthier, happier and more fulfilled children, but to improved educational attainment. Evidence from those areas that already provide universal free school meals is that children eat more healthily and perform better academically. Schools in those areas have also reported improved behaviour and atmosphere as a result of all pupils eating together every day.”

We believe that the school lunchtime is a great opportunity for all our children to sit down together and enjoy their healthy and tasty meal, while developing their social skills.  The midday supervisors will be able to encourage good habits and manners whilst the children are able to sit with their friends in a more sociable situation. In addition to the many benefits to the children, you too will be free of the need to buy and prepare packed lunches every day. No more remembering to bring the lunch box to school – and then get it back again at the end of the day! We therefore hope that all parents will take up this offer of a free school meal for our pupils.

Chartwells provide ‘delivered-in’ school meals and operate a ‘pre-order’ system. There is, however, a minimum order. It is therefore essential that parents allow their child to trial the service before making any decision to opt for sending in a packed lunch. We kindly request that you sign up for a trial period of half a term. Parents will not be able to opt ‘in and out’ of the service.

We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity for your child to enjoy a healthy, balanced and nutritious meal every day.

Please see the attached termly menu, complete the meal choices form with your child and return it to Mrs Brady or Mrs Craig in the school office by 9am each Monday for the service to commence the following week.

If we do not receive choices by this date, we will automatically order the main meal option for your child.

Pupil Premium

Are you eligible for free school meals?

A new Citizen Portal has been launched to help you find out if your child qualifies for free school meals.

Please visit to sign up, even if your child is in year R, 1 or 2 and receiving universal free school meals, or if you have applied before and do not think you are eligible.

In doing so you will help us to find out whether we can claim pupil premium for your child. This is additional funding to spend on resources such as extra staff, books or school trips for eligible children.

The system is quick and simple to use and can be accessed via a smartphone or hand held device. If you qualify, you will receive a reference number that you simply bring in and show us at school to start receiving meals. Please register at https://emsonline.milton-keynes.gov.uk/CitizenPortal_LIVE
