Children in Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1  have daily discrete Phonics sessions.  In EYFS the children are generally taught as a class progressing from Phase 2 to Phase 4 by the end of the year.  In KS1 the children are split into ability groups across both Years 1 and 2.   Where appropriate, children from KS1 and EYFS may be mixed if it is deemed to be beneficial.  We aim for Year 1 children to be taught Phase 5 in Year 1 and Phase 6 in Year 2. We use planning from  ‘Letters and Sounds’ and use Phonics Bug and Phonics Play interactive software to help deliver this in an engaging way.  Children also have access to a range of other games and books to supplement their learning.


Bug Club

Bug Club is a whole-school reading service for EYFS and KS1 that transforms readers into lifelong readers. Children are instantly engaged in their own personalised reading world. Interactive activities, characters they know and love and rewards keeps them motivated. It's perfect for their independent reading journey. Whether they’re reading Ben10 eBooks at home, acting in a play written by Julia Donaldson, or thumbing through their favourite Batman comic, Bug Club helps them catch and keep the reading bug.

Phonics Play

The free area of the Phonics Play website is filled with free interactive games, phonics planning, assessment ideas and printable resources. There is lots of advice to support parents in helping their children learn to read.

Schools are required to administer a satutory year 1 phonics screening check in June each year.

As this is a legal requirement, we request that parents do not plan annual holidays during the summer period.



Alongside shared reading in whole class sessions, children are taught to read through a variety of means:

  • Guided Reading sessions where children of a similar ability are grouped together and are led by a teacher or teaching assistant. Children have access to a wide range of levelled texts from Pearson’s Bug Club and Phonics Bug schemes, as well as Rigby Star for our younger pupils.
  • Daily discrete Phonics sessions
  • Individual levelled reading books.These are shared with the teacher or teaching assistant each week and then taken home to read with parents and carers.Our reading scheme books are predominantly Oxford Reading Tree, supplemented with Collins ‘Big Cat’ and Phonics Bug books.
  • School Library or ‘Reading corner’ books: we encourage children to ‘read for pleasure’. Children have opportunities during the week to choose from a wide range of high quality ‘real books’ and comics to read alone or with friends.They are welcome to take these books home to enjoy with their families.
  • Some children may have short-term additional support with their reading, if required, using proven intervention strategies such as ‘Better Reading Partners’.
